Everything you need to know about car insurance.
In Switzerland, third-party liability is mandatory. Casco insurance is optional — except for leased vehicles, where fully comprehensive casco is typically required.

Third-party liability
Mandatory coverage that protects others from damage and injury you cause. The policy applies to the registered vehicle.
Partial casco
Optional coverage for non-self-caused damage (e.g., theft, hail, glass, animal collisions).
Fully comprehensive casco
Optional coverage that adds collision/accident protection on top of partial casco — even when you caused the accident.
Leasing note
If you lease a vehicle, the leasing company generally requires accident coverage (fully comprehensive casco).
Deeper explanation
What each insurance type covers
Third-party liability insurance is required by law and regulated under Swiss road traffic legislation. It covers property damage and personal injury you cause to others with your vehicle. From the insurer’s perspective, it does not matter who was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident: the insurance applies to the vehicle registered with the cantonal road traffic authority, not to the driver.

Add-ons you may want to consider
Bonus protection helps prevent your top from increasing after a claim. Depending on the provider, one (sometimes two) claims per year may not increase your top the following year.
